2 Questions About New Mountain Bike?

ok, just bought a new kona mountain bike,
got two quick questions, the pedals are just normal pedals with straps on and jagged teeth all the way round, they are hurting my feet, as i feel they are not wide enough, i only ride trails and roads , would i be better off buying the wide pedals like the kona jacksh+t?
secondly , i have noticed that i had tiny back pain ,just above my backside, the bars i have on the bike are riser bars , but they are not the hi risers, would using the higher risers be better?
thanks

There are alot of pedals to choose from, clip ons, teeth and metal flat ones i guess you could call them, with small studs. The fitting is pretty much universal, so have a browse.
The teeth and clip ons I find dangerous.
The pain in your back could either be the difference in height between your seat and handle bars. Ride magazine say they should both be the exact same height. Or if you haven’t rode in a while. your using new pressure points and muscles again and will soon get used to it.
    Happy riding :)

Yes, wide platform pedals are much better, the pedals you have are intended for serious offroading, did you talk to the bikeshop about this, they would have been happy to change the pedals for you.
If you are a beginner, do not use toe clip straps, they can be very dangerous, you can if you want get strapless toe clips, which are much safer, see above re bike shop.
Your back pain may be because you have bought the wrong size of bike, or it has not been set up to suit your size, see above re bike shop.
Or did you buy on-line? in which case you are on your own.

Rat-traps are, in my view, dangerous on mountain bike as they trap the feet if you go for full-on mountain biking.
Keep adjusting the saddle and handlebar height until you feel comfortable.
