you have to go through all the things that go between your feet to your back sprockets. pedals, Friend sprockets crank arms, front chain rings,bottom bracket, chain, rear chain rings. canceling all the points in question will needle it down to the exact piece that needs attention.
if you do it when u change the numbers (gears) on your handlebars its just the crank switching the gears. Its fine. it usually makes the noise a few seconds after you do it of until your pedaling hard/easily enough.
if you bought the bike from wal-mart i would recommend buying a new one.
if not then take it to a mechanic to let them deal with it
