Mountain Bike Problem?
Ive just bought a 26" 18 speed mountain bike, its a beautiful bike but its got a problem.
While Im peddling everything seems fine (except for working out the gears LOL) but as soon as I stop peddling the chain drops seriously slack
and either derails or gets stuck between the tyre and the frame. Also if Im walking the bike the pedals turn instead of freewheeling. Can anyone help me???

Happened to me. The plastic ring behind the gears on the rear wheel is touching the chain rings.
Alex knows his stuff. Sounds as something is just a little stiff or out of alignment with your gearing. As it’s a new bike that’s not likely to be down to mud or similar in the gears, chain or jockey wheels, so take it back to the shop and they should sort it out for you quickly.
Trying to make adjustments yourself can be tricky and counter-productive as there is a range of adjustments you can make. Once it’s sorted, keep it all clean and lightly lubricated with a suitable lubricant – again your bike shop should stock the right stuff.
This is almost certainly the freewheel, and can be dangerous as the chain can wrap up and catch in the wheel when you are riding.
Contact your supplier immediately, if bought on-line, they should tell you to get it fixed by a shop and repay you ( although a lot of shops wont touch cheap mail order bikes because of liability problems).
If you bought from a shop, get it back to them, they will fix it.
Whatever you do, do not start messing yourself, you will invalidate the warranty.
I sometimes get this when I have been out for a ride and I have clag in my rear jocky wheels or general dirt.
Cleaning your rear jockey wheels and putting viable oil on the chain may help. However, it could be your free hub. Take it back to the shop and get them to look at it. If you have cleaned and oiled and the problem is still there, then it is probably something that your bike shop needs to sort out.
Luck
all the above could be right. my money would be on the freewheel on the hub not running freely. thats the bit the gear rings goes on. a new rear wheel would solve that, or a bike shop servicing it.
it doesnt sound like a rear mech problem, as that usually results in gears slipping or not changing when riding, not when freewheeling.
bike shop is the best option. WD40 is not an option, do not use it, it acts as a degreaser, not a lubricant when used on bikes. bikes need more robust grease than WD40
yeah the beared lady is right but the chain not being free spun sounds like a hub problem so make sure that is fixed once you get in back and if you didnt buy your bike at a shop you can pay them to do it its not very much and if you want to try to attempt it yourself email me and ill walk you through it
You have a bad freewheel or the plastic disk on the wheel is rubbing against the freewheel. Pick up the bike and spin the wheel. The limit screw on the derailleur needs adjusted to prevent the chain from running off of the gears.http://bicycletutor.com/adjust-rear-dera…
You should take it back to the shop for adjusting. Some new bikes go through teething when new and a good bike shop should offer a service during the initial weeks.
bikeshop
sounds like the rear derailleur is out of position
