Mountain Bike Repair Question.?
Hi, i am having problems with my mountain bike, what it is that every time i push hard on the pedals to increase my speed i hear a cluck every time and if i push hard it seems to slip and its hard to cylce anywhere, i was told it could possibly be the rear cassette. Also the grip says that the bike gear is at 3 out of 3, even though the chain is on the middle rail (if that makes sense), the bike shifts down to 1 but when you go to 2 it sounds like it is hit the front derailleur. Sorry for poor explanation and could someone please help me.

You need to adjust the derailleurs. Watch these video’s and do not touch the screws at all. The barrel adjuster for the front derailleur will be on the left shifter.http://bicycletutor.com/adjust-front-der…http://bicycletutor.com/adjust-rear-dera…
Bob’s got the right idea here, but it doesn’t sound like you’re all that familiar with bikes; you may want to consider taking your bike in to a local bike shop and having them tune the derailleurs for you, to avoid risk of damaging the bike. It shouldn’t take them more than 20 minutes to tune the derailleurs, and shouldn’t cost more than $20, assuming you don’t need a new bike chain (which could also cause slippage, but is less likely). What kind of bike do you have? If you bought it @ Walmart (or equivalent) it’s probably not worth fixing, since those things are such abominations anyway. Save the $20 and put it toward a new bike from a well-known brand.
Gears need setting up properly, take to halfords if unsure how to do it. put it in gear and check if the chain is being fouled by the front derallieur as under heavy strain ie pedelling hard it would make this noise and even jump the chain hence the gear shift number issue, hope this helps good luck
As the man said, your gears are not set up properly, but DO NOT take to Halfords. Take it to your local bike shop. Gear set up costs about £6. Won’t break the bank. Failing that you need to adjust your +- screws. Go to

You will find how to guids, like Heynes.
The slipping gears at the rear could be adjustment, or it could be wear and tear. When did you last change your chain and casset?
Measure your chain. New it should be 12 links = 12 “. If your chain measures 12 1/16″ then change your chain only. If 12 1/8″ or more, you need to do both. Try indexing first and see how it goes.
Luck
how about changing the bottom bracket that is wat was wrong with mine
