Mountain/hybrid Bike Chain Slipping And Popping Off?

Recently, my Mountain bikes chain has been 'slipping', the pedals like stop having force and 'pop', so I have to stop pedalling and start again. Sometimes it happens the same way as to the chain will pop off the bike. This bike isn't that old, and I don't use it very much, but this is very annoying, and dangerous, as I've almost lost my balence multiple times. It happens mostly on 7th gear on the back wheel, but does happen in other gears. It wasn't happening too frequently until today, where it happened at least 10 times in 10 minutes.
Any help? I don't know much about bikes, but I do know a little bit.

Most likely, your cables have stretched. That is totally normal. They just need to be tweeked a little bit. I’ll bet that if you take it to a bike shop they will fix it in about 10 seconds. Might charge you a little but might do it for free. Just hang out in there, look at stuff, maybe buy something. Ask the mechanic some questions, they like it. You never know, you might make a friend!
To try to fix it, look where the cable goes into the shifter. There is a small knob-type thing that the cable goes through into the shifter. Turn it about one whole turn, so it screws out. This will tighten the cable about 1/8 inch. It might be enough. If it gets worse, go the other way (some rear derailleurs are backwards). If you are nervous about it, take it to the shop!
Oh, and why aren’t you doing the extreme/fun stuff? Go for it! (wear you helmet, tho)
