New Pedals….?

I just bought some Shimano bike shoes from LL Bean which are kinda mountain bike style, and comapatible with SPD style pedals. My bike is a Trek 7.3 which I use strictly for exercise on road. If I decided to go with a clipless pedal, should I use a road pedal or a mountain bike pedal? I'm afraid to use road style since you can't really use them unless you are wearing cleated shoes, but from what I understand, you can ride a mountain style pedal with or without, right?

If you have mountain bike style shoes there is a high possibility that a road pedal will not work. Most road pedals have a different style on how you attach the cleat to the shoe than Shimano’s SPD pedals. Even Shimano’s road pedals won’t work on mountain bike shoes(Don’t confuse Shimano’s road pedals the SPDSL for normal SPD pedals). I would recommend a mountain bike pedal. If you are not planning to use the clipless pedal all the time I think the Shimano PD-M324 is your best bet. This pedal has a platform on one side and the clipless on the other. This way you won’t be limited to using your bicycle with clipless pedals all the time. Even Trek specs out the Trek 7.6 with a one sided clipless pedal like the Shimano PD-M324.

Just go for small spd pedals. I use them on three of my road bikes and on my mountain bike, they really are the best of both worlds. Mountain bike shoes like the ones you got are very comfortable which is what you probably are wanting. I have been riding for ten years with the same type shoe, road and off road. I tried some of the traditional road shoes and they were very uncomfortable for me , but other people love them.

    Yes and No??
Mountain bike pedals are available with a cleat entry on one side and platform on the other ..or…. Shimano M324 has a platform both sides just in case you dont wear your cleats.
Unless you are serious on the roadie side stick with MTB pedals.
    Hope this helps
