The Shimano® PD-M424 off-road SPD pedal includes dual-sided, pop-up bindings that position the body at a 12.5-degree angle for easy and fast entry. The large cages allow for non-cleated shoes and all-around use and the cleat tension adjustment fits a variety of rider preferences.
What is really cool about this pedal, especially for beginning riders, is that it features a large and solid platform that is very forgiving if you aren't able to get into the clip immediately. You can pedal like normal while you are working your foot into position. The PD-M424 has dual sided entry so you don't have to mess with getting the pedal into position and this is a lifesaver for a beginner.
Who Should Buy
These Shimano PD-M424 are a great entry level clip less pedal that would be perfect for a beginner who is learning to ride clip less. They are not very expensive and they are a very forgiving design. They also use the much vaunted SPD style clips so you can buy shoes that match these pedals and then later on down the road if you choose to upgrade, you can still use the same shoes as long as you stay with SPD.
The platform is large enough that if you are putting around the neighborhood then you could even wear a regular set of shoes to ride and skip the special shoes altogether but long term or off road you definitely will need a pair of shoes to match the pedals. If you are looking for an inexpensive set of beginning pedals for clipless riding then the Shimano PD-M424 pedals are a solid choice.
